ABOUT ME

Prof. Pic.JPG

My name is Kayla Matzek, and I am a third year Writing and Literature student at UC Santa Barbara. I volunteer in middle school classrooms by running poetry workshops with the students. I also write my own poetry in workshops provided to me by the university.

I also have a passion for journalism, as I was a social media and website intern for UCSB's Humanities and Fine Arts website from January 2019 to June 2019. I also hold the positions of Vice President and Community Service Chair for UCSB's National Society of Leadership and Success chapter.

It wasn't evident to me that writing was the major I should pursue until halfway through my Freshman year at UCSB. I started my college journey as a Psychology major, and I quickly learned that it was the completely wrong choice. When people warn you that your major is destined to change, maybe even more than once, they're not lying.

I discovered the small, intimate college on UCSB's campus that I instantly grew to love, The College of Creative Studies (CCS). If I knew about this college sooner, it would've been my first choice. The collaboration and genuine kindness I witnessed in the first creative studies course I took blew me away. The talent, the creativity, and the support through the professors and students in CCS determined that this is where I needed to be to pursue my passion for writing.

Ever since my first creative writing workshop, I have grown, learned, and experienced so much pushing me to become a better writer and boosting my confidence to try out new things. And I'm just getting started.
